Dr Olutomi Coker (MBBS, FRCOG, MSc)
Dr Coker is a second term Commissioner of Health in Ogun State having stepped into the role in January 2020. A Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with over thirty two years experience in Healthcare Delivery in United Kingdom. Her professional experience is underpinned by her training in the National Health Service (NHS), UK and her Health management training at The Harvard Business School Boston . She holds a Masters of Science in Global Public Health from Queen Mary’s University London, UK.
She is a disruptive leader who has deployed several Innovations and Technology to drive policies within the public healthcare sector. In her role as Commissioner, she led an effective innovation-driven response to the COVID -19 pandemic with the first two cases in Sub-Saharan Africa detected in her domain. She has optimized resource mobilization and allocation to deliver strategic policies particularly in the Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health to reduce maternal and Under -5 morbidity and mortality.
Dr Coker’s transformative capital projects such as the one of it’s kind integrated Drug and Vaccines Pharma grade Warehouse, an enhanced Emergency Ambulance Service including the Rural Maternal Health Emergency Transport , introduction of Electronic Medical Records across the 3 tiers of the health system, revitalization of over one hundred primary healthcare centers and the free health insurance scheme for pregnant women has improved access to quality healthcare services, immunization rate , neonatal and maternal indices as well as strengthened the Ogun state Health system for Non- Communicable Diseases.
Her commitment to quality and evidence-based health systems building particularly in Low- and Middle-Income Countries has earned her recognition as one of the 100 Most Influential People of African Descent in Health and winner of the Bill and Melinda Gates PHC Leadership challenge in 2023, and recently the 2024 CDC award of excellence for best performing disease surveillance team in Nigeria.
Dr Coker is a member of several national healthcare reform committees. She is passionate about the impact of climate change in health and her resilience is encapsulated in her reaching the summit of The Mount Kilimanjaro in the year 2016. She is an avid Golfer and adventurer.
